WHAT MAKES BEESWAX CANDLES SO GREAT?
Going back in history, beeswax was the preferred candle type by royalty, nobility and the church because of its pleasant aroma and beautiful light. Argument could be made that it is still the preferred candle type, at least for those with information to base their decision. The good news is that beeswax candles are no longer out of reach for most consumers. Beeswax candles are the cleanest, brightest, and longest burning.
100% PURE
Beeswax candles do not require chemical processing. Beeswax is one of the densest waxes and has a high melting point. This means that beeswax doesn’t need any hardeners, additives, or chemical treatments to make a quality product. For these, the candle making process is simple and environmentally friendly. First, beeswax is sourced straight from the hive. Then it's melted down and any particulates are cleaned out - beeswax must be free of impurities to burn properly. Once the beeswax is clarified, it’s ready to be poured. Finally, each candle is burnished by hand - and that’s it! No artificial scents or colouring are added to these candles because beeswax doesn’t need it.
BRIGHTER, LONGER BURN
Beeswax candles emit light that is similar to the light spectrum of sunlight. This is thanks to beeswax’s high melting point of approximately 65C. Because beeswax has a higher melting point than other waxes, it emits the brightest, most warm-toned flame. Beeswax candles also last longer than most other candles. Because it is so dense (0.958), it burns slower and drips less, and many consider beeswax candles to be drip free.
SUBTLE, NATURAL SCENT
One of the reasons we love beeswax so much is its versatility. Our beeswax candles get their scent from the nectar and honey that was originally stored in the honeycomb. Therefore, the scents of the candles change slightly depending on what the bees were pollinating. Some past batches of beeswax have had traces of Rapeseed, Apple blossom and heather Honey. One of the most popular came from a hive pollinating Facelia. Regardless of where the beeswax came from, all of these candles have a subtle and pleasing, honey-like scent.
AIR PURIFYING
Unlike many other candles, burning beeswax actually purifies the air. Beeswax candles emit negative ions which bind with particulate matter in the air, causing the floating particles in the air to drop to the ground. Some say negative ions also stimulate the pituitary gland, thus increasing creativity, intuition, and dream activity. Because of their air cleansing properties, beeswax candles are a great candle option for people with allergies, asthma, sinuses and sensitivities.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
By choosing these candles, you can support local beekeepers in Edinburgh. Beeswax is a natural by-product of the beekeeping industry. It’s made and used by bees to store their honey and raise their broods. After periods of high honey flow, beekeepers remove the extra honeycombs. Our beeswax comes from the slow, sustainable capping of these honeycombs. Many other candle materials come from industries that harm or deplete the environment. Beeswax is a natural, renewable resource from an industry that helps the environment. Bees play a pivotal role in our lives by pollinating the crops we eat and plants in the wild. Beeswax is just another miracle that comes from these amazing insects.
